So interesting... I wonder if it's something to do with our training as women - that it's more appealing to think 'we can have the life that woman is living/be like her' than 'we can have what we actually want'... Thanks for a glimpse into your world, I enjoyed reading.

Loved reading this. Am endlessly fascinated by the inner workings of glossy mags, especially back in their hey day.

And agreed, I think we want to relate to the cover star, maybe even hope they can offer us some clues as to how we can be a bit cooler / more fun / better looking etc like them. Thanks again for a great read!

I do think that it's b/c we want to see a reflection of ourselves - or something aspirational - in the picture on the cover. Or in my case, I see something I resent, b/c it's so artificial and done-up. Either way, a man on the cover would be irrelevant. It's a similar reason to why both men and women will watch women in porn... Men fantasize being with her, and women fantasize being her.

Women compete with women for men - so they want to see their competition on the cover of their magazines to see how they compare. Easy. It's as Angie Dickinson said when asked if she wore the gowns she wore to impress men: "I dress for women, I undress for men."

Do women buy more magazines on the newsstand or supermarket than men? I get my mags via subscription and never know what the cover is till I get it. I am a guy, by the way.
