This weird omission lets the Vogue documentary down
British Vogue in the 90s was Alex Shulman. So why pretend otherwise?
Let’s start with some positives. Here’s what I adored about the Disney+ documentary series, In Vogue, The 90s. It was a Grade A nostalgic binge: There was so many pieces of pop culture from the era that I’d sort of forgotten about - Brad and Gwyneth! Courtney and Kurt! SJP’s seemingly endless collection of nightie dresses and kitten-heeled mules! - and yet, when they flashed up on screen, I was right back in it.
It also reminded me of the huge sense of gratitude I feel to have worked on magazines in those days. The hallowed halls of Vogue were nowhere near within my reach. It didn’t even enter my head to fantasise about working on Vogue; a chimp will get a job at Pret before that happens. But even seeing some of those famous covers pop back up on a TV screen sent me hurtling back to how it felt to be working in magazines in those days.
