Bravo! your attitude is PERFECT! I just turned 80, had a major health scare in my 50s, almost died. Consequently, I damn happy to be here with a wonderful husband, 4 great "kids" (none below 50), living in a nice place....I could go on, but won't. AND 4 grandchildren........whew.
I am almost 49. My 'real' age is 28. I am probably not on top of skincare as most people in terms of products, but my face gets cleaned every night, I don't beyond a basic rinse in the morning and I am really working hard on not squeezing the blackheads *gulp*! Exercise and good eating have always been a part of my life since uni so I am grateful for the choices I have made there. I definitely care less about what people think. I'm thankful for my mum who is in her late seventies but hits the gym three days a week, gardens, volunteers, cooks and eats mostly at home (she and my stepdad do go out for dinner occasionally and when they travel) and meets up with friends for morning tea often. She has very few major health problems.
And I am grateful for my nana, grammy, and great grandma who may not have had the latest skin care products or clothing but were caring, kind, thoughtful, practical, and no nonsense (with a sense if humor) and lived through so many life changing global and personal events (in to different countries) and came out the other side with all of that in tact. My nana was 84 when she died, my grammy 98, and my great grandmother, 96 - hoping to reach their milestones while still learning along the way :)
40 is the old age of youth, 50 is the youth of old age (from my mum) Thanks for promoting this narrative Jo!
I couldn’t agree more! I feel I look better at 44 than I ever did at 24 or 34 and that’s because beauty is so much more than just the aesthetic - that aura, that confidence and power -PHEW
Thank you for your wonderful piece about Not making our selves invisible as we age. I turned 60 last year and I have long embraced my ageing, apart from not revelling in the increasing aches and pains of arthriticky knees and toes which stops enjoyment of hiking and skiing. I never dyed my hair so now it is silver and gets so many comments. I usually put it up in some fashion and pop a hair flower or a Chinese stick or clasp in it. My mother witheringly say that I am looking eccentric again, and I love to wear colourful dresses, often from the wonderful Aussie company, Gorman. I love your description of Full Clown! I lost a cousin when we were both 21 so I have always been happy to keep getting older as poor Lou never will. I think that my friends and family will also say that I look better now than aged 31. The perm certainly did not help! My son recently said that I have had a Glow Up as I aged. XX
Bravo Jo I’m 61 look like I’m in my 40s so I’ve been told feel great as I’ve always done lots of exercise and absolutely agree that a skincare ritual is a must and I don’t scrimp using cheaper alternatives either diet and health a must and my husband tells me I have the body of someone half my age so it’s the 2 finger salute to the rest of the world so let’s embrace ageing for all it’s worth 🤣
LOVE this piece Jo, thank you! The difference between you now and younger you is staggering and what I see is a hundred times more confidence - inspiring to see the difference that makes! Bien dans sa peau as the French would say. Off to dig out a pictures of a much more insecure younger self as a reminder that ageing isn’t all bad after all!
Love this! I just posted a piece today about my perimenopausal belly and how we are wayyy too beaten up about our aging looks. If enough of us talk about this and refuse the old way, the quicker we can move on with respecting who we are.
Love this. I am in better shape at 54 than I was at any other time. My new hack to sleeping better is no alcohol in the week. I agree that when you get the right haircut it helps a lot.
What a great piece! The wonderful thing about aging is learning to love yourself . I’m 67 and like many here I’ve taken care of my skin , exercised and eaten well for a long time . My 60’s is when I started layering in other things — a slow morning , nightly bath, less busy , more present . I’m so much happier.
60 and thriving and finally choosing myself which, for me means (finally!) taking care of my mental and emotional health as much as i have taken care of my physical health which for decades has meant an 85% (ish) plant based diet, running and pilates but now includes mental health care, improved sleep habits, and more often than ever saying NO as a complete sentence to sh*t that doesn't serve me :)
I’m 36 and I know I should focus more on my diet and exercise - but I hate exercising (school trauma), I live alone and in Canada where grocery prices are RIDICULOUS! I also have a super stressful job. So 3 excuses there 😂
Thanks Emily! The grocery thing is a bloody nightmare everywhere at the moment, including London. You can trawl back through my content though, there's a piece called 'Come Dine With Me' where I have detailed my favourite quick dinner recipes but crucially they are also all very cheap to make. I'm the only meat eater in our house which means I don't tend to eat it every single day which helps the bills. If you have a stressful job, I think you owe it to yourself to carve out time for you. Maybe just start with some long walks? Moving is so important, it's a free gift you can give to yourself. xx

I love this …I’m 57 this year and thanks to exercising and a (mostly) good diet, I feel fitter and stronger than any other decade.

It's actually a good exercise isn't it, to see how far we've come! x
I'm glad you love your face - we do too x

Love this, and making peace with your face - still working on this (in my 40s), but I’m better at it than I was!

Thanks this was lovely and I am with you! (And buying Trinny’s eye cream right now!)
Loved this, Jo!

Thanks Jo - you’re right! It’s heavy snow and -20 at the moment though which makes my motivation zero…! I’ll check that post out, thank you!
You look fantastic. Thank you for standing up for getting older x
