Are you doing Valentine’s Day? It doesn’t get much air time in our house if I’m honest with you. My daughter jokingly asked me to buy her a card for tomorrow because she said it would - I quote - ‘put a pep in her step.’ But the husband and I are still traumatised by the time we tried to go out for dinner in New York but we forgot it was February 14th and every single restaurant on the island of Manhattan was booked out with doe-eyed couples. How can anything like this kind of factory setting approach to romance be at all real? We’ll be having a curry with two of our friends - love and the smell of mango chutney will be in the air.
Still, Valentine’s Day did give Amanda Wakeley and I a nice excuse to really think about how we like to dress for dates in general. So we devoted an episode of Friday Night Fashion to it. Here’s my picks for any night of the week that you’re in the mood for love.
This Rixo dress
A just sexy enough number that is an effortless way to feel dressed up. But you could also layer it up with a lightweight, long-sleeved T and boots for everyday wear. It comes in other prints as well.
This River Island Body Suit
A great lowkey way to add some glamour to any pair of your favourite old jeans.
This Zara dress
I love the way the satin floats over the body in a light skim, rather than an obvious cling. I don’t love it with the belt, but fashion designer Amanda Wakeley does, so let’s all just wear it however the hell we want to. Either way, that beautiful chocolate shade will look great with neutrals or bright colours too, like a bright pink or turquoise bag or shoes.
This Sezane blouse
They just never ever get it wrong, do they? Perfection in a blouse that will be usefulfor years.
This Wiggy Kit pirate shirt
This gorgeous piece keeps selling out. But they keep restocking so one day I will be quick enough. One day…
This David Bowie vintage T
Like I said on Friday Night Fashion, men can’t resist talking about music so it’s a good conversation starter for a first date. Wear this with these trousers, below…
These Serena Bute trousers
These are slouchy but in a sexy way, especially if you pair with strappy heels and a snug fitting top like a simple tank.
These Frame embellished jeans
That subtle sparkle solves the problem of not wanting to look like you tried too hard, or that you didn’t try it all.
This Damson Madder dress
I wouldn’t style it with these shoes and socks for a date night, even though I’m very here for that look. I do like the pretty cut if you’re looking for something a bit more feminine and demure.
This Never Fully Dressed dress
This is effortless and still sexy, in a beautiful colour. Always love Never Fully Dressed for their broad range of sizing too.
Let me know what you’d wear for date night. Any of this?
