When I started this Substack series about The Glamour Women of the Year Awards, I imagined it as one, maybe two features. But thanks to your wonderful responses, I’ve decided to continue with examining one year at a time. And so here I will examine 2011. That was thirteen years ago which just feels surreal. My daughter walked in as I was looking through old videos from the night and said exactly what I was thinking: ‘Wow, what a time capsule.’
Sure is. Being interviewed backstage after picking up her TV presenter of the year award, Davina McCall joked that she would never win an NTA or TV Bafta, ‘until Ant and Dec do something scandalous.’ There are party videos of Caroline Flack laughing and dancing. Ellie Goulding won the award for ‘breakthrough’ act. Kim Kardashian is there - to receive an Entrepreneur of the Year Award - and no one is losing their tiny minds about it. She was not yet the internet-breaking, Met Gala-owning supernova that she is today. Years later, speaking about magazine careers at a high school, a student put her hand up and asked if I had ever met Kim Kardashian. I said no, before going, ‘Oh wait! I have, I just… um… forgot for a second!’
I can’t remember a single thing we said to each other.
Nevertheless, she was famous and important enough to require having a prestigious seat in the room, so we sat her next to our company president, Nicholas Coleridge. She’d be pleased to get face time with the man who oversaw several international editions of Vogue, Vanity Fair, GQ and more. I remember asking him, ‘What did you talk about with Kim Kardashian?’
